Your Rights: RBI Zero Liability Policy

Under the RBI Unauthorized Transaction Guidelines, your liability depends entirely on how quickly you report. Know your rights.

Full refund if reported within 3 days

If you report an unauthorized transaction within 3 working days of receiving the bank's SMS/email notification, you have zero liability — you are entitled to a full refund regardless of the transaction amount. This applies to all bank fraud, UPI fraud, and card fraud.

!
Limited liability if reported within 4–7 days

If you report between 4 to 7 working days, your maximum liability is capped depending on your account type: ₹5,000 for basic savings accounts, ₹10,000 for other savings/prepaid accounts, and ₹25,000 for credit cards with limits above ₹5 lakh. The bank must refund the rest.

Always save your Acknowledgement Number

When you report a fraud to your bank or on cybercrime.gov.in, you receive an Acknowledgement Number. This is your legal proof of reporting. Save it immediately — it is required to escalate to the RBI Banking Ombudsman if your bank does not resolve the issue within 30 days.
